Afghanistan: Jazz Bridges
Jazz Bridges trio teaches and performs in Kabul
For one week the American Voices Jazz Bridges trio, CoCo York, Gene Aitken and Phil Dunlap, taught and performed in Kabul. Highlights of their tour included workshops for over 200 youth at the Afghan National Institute of Music, Kabul University, Afghan National Television and the Foundation for Culture and Civil Society.
As part of American Voices' Jazz Bridges concept, the trio joined forces with Afghan's national treasure, rhobab player Gulam Hossein and his ensemble from the Agha Khan Foundation and the Foundation for Culture and Civil Society. Their fusion of Afghan traditionals with jazz proved a huge hit with Afghan audiences in one of the few public concerts held in Kabul in recent memory.
The Jazz Bridges Trio featured vocalist CoCo York, Gene Aitken on bass and Phil Dunlap of Jazz St Louis on piano.
The program was supported by the U.S. Embassy to Kabul with additional support from Ronco Consulting.
