Turkey: HaviKoro Break Dance Group Rocks in Ankara, Izmir and Istanbul
HaviKoro performed in Ankara and Izmir June 23 – 27, 2006. On June 24, the group performed in the 2nd annual Castle Festival in Ankara’s Ulus neighborhood. After spinning and scratching for an enthusiastic crowd of 150, the group brought neighborhood children onstage for a quick lesson. The next day, HaviKoro thrilled picnickers at the English Access Summer Institute and Day Camp kick off at the Ambassador’s Residence. The audience of 350 students, their parents, and teachers received the group enthusiastically. The high school kids especially enjoyed trying the moves themselves in a short workshop. On June 26, HaviKoro performed for the Fourth of July reception in Izmir. Photos and descriptions of the event appeared the next day in the national edition of “Hurriyet” and was also noted in the “Turkish Daily News” on June 26.
Audiences in Ankara and Izmir were treated to a popular form of American culture with a difference and HaviKoro’s positive message to young people about hard work and respect for parents and teachers was appreciated by all.
In Istanbul Havikoro gave a dance workshop to 75 students at the Aytunc Dance Academy. The following day, HaviKoro gave an interview with NTV News. NTV is a nationally broadcast 24-hour news channel. The 1' 30" interview was shown twice. That evening they performed for an audience of over 2,000 at the Sapphire Club.
