Cambodia: Khmer Blues
Vocalist CoCo York and pianist DD Jackson performed on January 16th and 17th in Phnom Penh in celebration of the opening of the new U.S. Embassy there.
The gala program highlighted not only American Jazz and Blues, but also Cambodian traditional dance by Amrita in an excerpt from "Weyreap's Battle," a scene from the Reamker, the Cambodian version of the Ramayana Epic and a performance by a rising young Cambodian ballet dancer, Sokvannara Sar.
In addition, performances were given by the legendary Suon Peng, known as the Ray Charles of Cambodia, playing the Chapei Dang Veng (long neck guitar) in a style often likened to the Delta Blues of Southeast Asia.
The American Voices segment of the program was brought to a close with a joint performance by CoCo, DD and the Royal University of Fine Arts singers in 'Bye Bye Blackbird'.
