Taiwan: Summer Jazz
Taiwan International Summer Jazz Academy Aug 22 to 27, 2004
Shih-Chien University Campus
The Taiwan International Summer Jazz Academy (TISJA) was the first ever opportunity for Taiwanese jazz students to study intensively with internationally renowned jazz musicians. The program was announced extensively throughout the country and the student body was comprised of musicians from across Taiwan.
TISJA was attended by 55 students ranging in age from 18 to 35. Students at the intermediate to advanced levels of ability were accepted into this year’s program.
In general, it appears that TISJA has breathed new life into the small but growing jazz studies community in Taiwan and given birth to further educational activities on a year round basis.
Our faculty this year included:
John Ruocco, Woodwinds, Conservatory of The Hague
Ron Nethercutt, Trombone, University of the Philippines
Fabien DeGryse, Guitar, Brussels Conservatory
ChiPin Hsieh and Kaiya Chang, Shih Chien University, Taipei
Mike Del Ferro, Piano
Roy Dackus, Drums
Frans van der Hoeven, Bass
Plans for TISJA 2005:
American Voices plans to repeat the TISJA experience in 2005 with much the same format. Planned additions to the program include the following:
-Introduction of a Musical Theatre and Broadway program for classically trained singers and addition of jazz vocalist option for those partaking in this program.
