Variations on America in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan
After many visits to the capital cities of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, American Voices was intrigued by the opportunity to perform in several regional capitals of both countries. In Kazakhstan our tour took us by bumpy roads and YAK 40s to Semey, Oskemen (Ust-Kammenogorsk), Karaganda and Astana. Our tour in Kyrgyzstan took us over even bumpier roads to Jalalabad, Osh, Tokmok, Karaganda and Bishkek.
It is heartening to see that high levels of both music-making and music education continue to thrive amidst continuing economic difficulties in Central Asia. It was also a real thrill to drive through the vast Central Asian Steppe and along the shores of the idyllic Lake Issykul.
