Ragtime and Beyond in Brunei
The chance to give a solo piano concert in the oft-discussed but rarely visited Sultanate of Brunei was a rare opportunity. The concert at the Empire Hotel was one of continual astonishment for a pianist as every corner one turned in this vast edifice revealed yet another amazing Steinway, Boersendorfer or Fazioli grand piano. Later visits to the Polo Club told much the same story. A pianist’s paradise! Now they just need to break these instruments in and use them for making music…..
Ragtime, Vaudeville, Broadway and Beyond was the theme of this sold-out concert for the Brunei Music Society. A fun evening and even more fun on the next day’s visit to St. Andrew’s school where, as the headlines reported the next day, ‘American Pianist Mobbed by Students’! Great fun and lots of talent at this school, and we hope to be back!
