Azerbaijan: Caspian Jazz & Blues Festival

Baku Jazz Festival 2004

Those benefiting from the projects this year were overwhelmingly the young jazz musicians of Baku, the Break Dance generation and dance school at the House of Officers, the Baku Jazz Center and the concert-going public of Azerbaijan. Once again the Baku Big Band project proved to be one of the main highlights of the festival, though this too was not without obstacles beyond our control. We were particularly grateful for the percussion workshops given by Chris Strik from Holland and further rhythm section workshops by German group Sax Machine. The progress made in just a short time was audibly evident in the concerts and the Baku Big Band strives from strength to strength with each performance.

One of the exciting elements for us and many of Baku’s younger community were the workshops, performances and competitions with the Havikoro Break-dancers from Houston. Children of all ages arrived for the daily workshops, eager to learn and demonstrate their talents. The week was brought to a climax with an exciting break-dance competition at 1033. We would like to thank Baku break-dancing group League X for their assistance and cooperation in organizing the workshops and informing the young community.
