Algiers & Tunis, June 2004
Algiers & Tunis: Jazz from A to Z

Jazz from J to Z in Algeria and Tunis

The US Embassy-organized visit of the musical group, American Voices’, garnered widespread coverage in all the Algerian print and broadcast media. The performances of American Voices’ came on the occasion of both the American and Algerian National Independence Days (July 4 and 5 respectively).

Newspapers quoted the music players as saying: “We did not come to Algeria to perform only. We would, also, like to learn and understand.” Many reports commented that their the visit illustrated the growing American-Algerian cultural exchanges.

Algerian media reported that the American quartet conducted masterclasses for talented students at Algeria’s National Superior Institute of Music. While in Algeria, the American Voices’ Jazz gave concerts at the National Radio’s Cultural Center (June 30), at the Hilton Hotel (July 1), at the Algerian National Theater (July 2), and at the Ambassador’s Residence (July 3) for the Embassy’s official celebration of July 4th. The American Voices’ Jazz group was also invited to be interviewed by Algeria’s national television’s prime-time show ‘Bonjour d’Algerie’ (July 3), and, as a result, many Algerians later recognized the musicians when they were walking on the streets and greeted them with welcoming words.

Comments from the Press:

--“El Fadjr” “As Deborah Carter stated during a press conference, the performances of the group ‘American Voices’ Jazz’ to celebrate the Independence Days of both Algeria and the United States was an occasion for her to share as a human being with other people from a different country the feelings that she has regarding the beauty of music, which, according to Deborah Carter, goes through the soul and beyond any boundary in order to make different nations get together and communicate with each other through music even though our countries (the United States and Algeria) do not share the same language.”

--“La Tribune” “Because Jazz has this characteristic of being able to receive and gather all different music of the world, it was all cut out to illustrate the link between Algeria and the United States.”
