Vietnam: Porgy and Bess
Vietnam - Broadway in Vietnam featuring Gershwin's 'Porgy and Bess'
In a first for Vietnamese young musicians and audiences, American Voices brought its 'Porgy and Bess' project to the talented young singers of both the Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City Conservatories of Music. With only five days of preparations with American Voices artists Adurey Vallance, Ira Spaulding and John Ferguson, the choirs rose to the occasion and gave excellent concerts in both cities. It was the first time for both choirs to perform music by an American composer in english!
Over the course of the project approximately 60 music students from the Conservatory of Music in HCMC and 80 (!) from the Conservatory in Hanoi worked intensively with Audrey Vallance and Ira Spaulding in preparing a style of music that was completely new to the country. The concerts were recorded by both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh Television for rebroadcast.
Both concerts were attended by halls full of listeners curious to hear George Gershwin's favorite opera sung by American soloists and Vietnamese choirs!
