Kazakhstan: American Choral Music
Almaty, Kazakhstan - American Choral Music Project with the Almaty Conservatory of Music
From March 9th to 14th, American Voices brought its fourth American Artist-in-Residence program to Kazakh music students and audiences with a project highlighting American choral repertoire and composers. In a program ranging from the music of Randall Thompson to African-American spirituals, the students of the Music Academy choir were able to enjoy working with American choral specialist Ira Spaulding and pianist John Ferguson for the second first time. Their first collaboration being the performance of Gershwin's 'Porgy and Bess' in February of 2002.
Follow-up projects with American Voices are planned with the All Kazakhstan Jazz and Blues Festival 2003.
Over the course of the four-day program approximately 50 music students from the Almaty Conservatoryof Music enjoyed choral conducting workshops and rehearsals through intensive work with Ira Spaulding and John Ferguson.
A live audience of approximately 300 were reached in a public concert at the Philharmonic Hall.
