Belarus: African-American Choral Music
Belarus - American Choral Music Project with the Minsk Academy of Music
From February 24th to 27th, American Voices brought its first American Artist-in-Residence program to Belarusian music students and audiences with a project highlighting American choral repertoire and composers. In a program ranging from the music of Randall Thompson to African-American spirituals, the students of the Music Academy choir were able to enjoy working with American choral specialist Ira Spaulding and pianist John Ferguson for the first time. Follow-up projects are under discussion for 2004 with contemporary American music for choir and Gershwin's 'Porgy and Bess'.
Over the course of the three-day program approximately 100 music students from the Minsk Academy of Music enjoyed choral conducting workshops and rehearsals through intensive work with Ira Spaulding and John Ferguson.
A live audience of approximately 250 were reached in a public concert at the Music Academy and the concert was recorded by Belarussian TV for later re-broadcast nationwide.
