Philippines: Variations on America
From January 19th to 26th, American Voices brought its first American Artist-in-Residence program to Filipino audiences and educational institutions.
Over the course of the six-day program approximately 200 music students and 600 members of the concert-going public in the Manila region were reached via live performances, masterclasses and workshops in American music. Many thousands more were reached via radio broadcasts (DWBR-FM), press interviews (BusinessWorld) and later television interview broadcasts of these performances. An American Music Score collection was donated to St. Scholasticas College. The Filipino partner institutions for this residency included:
St. Scholastica's College
Shangri-la Plaza
Selected students and faculty from:
St. Thomas University, Philippines Women's University
De La Salle University, Univeristy of the Philippines
In the course of our events, many influential Filipino musicians and educational institutions were reached. Due to reduced budgets over the past few years, this residency was one of the first US Embassy music programs of its kind in recent memory and supported the US Embassy's goal of increased mutual understanding:
"Since our funding for cultural programs is modest at best, rarely have we had the opportunity to use American music in our public diplomacy programs. Your visit could not have been timelier, as it reinforced our efforts to foster mutual understanding. We commend you for your untiring dedication to the promotion of the American experience by sharing your talent and expertise with audiences around the world. We hope to see you return to the Philippines in the future."
