Homages to George Gershwin, Aaron Copland, Kurt Weill

These concert programs were developed during the centennial years of Gershwin, Copland and Weill in 1998, 1999 and 2000 respectively. They feature tributes to various angles and aspects of these composers compositions, lives and eras. In addition, concert tributes to Leonard Bernstein are included in this section.

GEORGE GERSHWIN

"On Catfish Row"

Three American opera soloists sing exerpts from Gershwin's famous opera "Porgy and Bess", accompanied by piano or orchestra. Also included are Negro Spirituals that inspired Gershwin during the writing of the opera.

Kathryn Magestro (soprano)
An evening of the best of Gershwin's beloved Broadway melodies and piano music.
Songs from shows and movie musicals such as "Shall We Dance", "An American in Paris",
"Strike Up the band", etc.

"Fascinating Gershwin"
An evening of Jazz and the Blues with CoCo York and trio.
Jazz standards from Gershwin's repertoire and the era of the 20's and 30's

With John Ferguson, featuring: 4 Piano Blues, Piano Variations, Danzon Cubano, Billy the Kid, and Night Thoughts.

The Piano Music for Two Pianos.
With John Ferguson and William Nyaho, featuring: Billy The Kid, Hoe Down and Saturday Night Waltz from Rodeo, Danzon Jalisco, Danzon Cubano, 4 Piano Blues, and Piano Variations.

A Copland Songbook: the Complete Songs.
Featuring: Old American Songs, arias from The Tender Land, and Emily Dickinson Songs, with Kathryn Magestro, soprano, Daniel Washington, baritone, and John Ferguson, pianist.

Aaron Copland and Jewish Music.
Featuring songs from Folksongs of the New Palestine, Vitebsk for chamber ensemble, art songs in Yiddish and Hebrew, and music of his contemporaries–Weill, Blitzstein, Bernstein, Bloch, and Gershwin.

Variations on Copland.
A program with 4-6 artists from American Voices, exploring the diverse aspects of Copland’s life and music through his early works and ballet scores, Jewish heritage, and his fascination with the American West and Midwest.
