Daniel Washington

Baritone Daniel Washington, a native of Summerville, South Carolina possesses a beautiful warm voice. He is well known throughout Europe for his versatility in opera, concert and recitals.

Mr. Washington has sung in many of the world's leading opera houses, including Zürich, Hamburg, London, Palermo and Catania. He has sung Amonasro in Aida at the Staatstheater Saarbrücken, Jochanaan in Salomé at the Teatro Massimo, Escamillo in Camen and Simon Boccanegra at the Stadttheater Luzern. He created the role of Steven Biko in the world premiere of the opera Biko in Birmingham, England for the Royal Opera's Garden Venture Project. His extensive repertoire also encompasses roles in operas by Mozart, Händel, Wagner, Martin and Henze.

Daniel Washington has appeared in concert with the Bournemouth Symphony, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the London Symphony, the Bayerische Rundfunk, the Musikverein Wien, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the Milwaukee Symphony, and the BBC Concert Orchestra. Recordings include the baritone solo in Appalachia by Delius, El Cimarron by Henze for BBC Radio, Pizarro in Fidelio and Tarquinio in Lucretia by Resphigi. As a recitalist he has appeared in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Spoleto Festival, USA.

Highlights from his career include his Royal Opera Covent Garden debut in Die Frau Ohne Schatten conducted by Bernard Haitink and singing the title roles in Der Fliegende Holländer and Don Giovanni at the Stadttheater Hof. He made his debut as Porgy in the highly acclaimed 1993 production of Porgy and Bess directed by Götz Friedrich. He has appeared on television in internationally broadcast concerts including a benefit concert for UNICEF as well as a concert version of Porgy and Bess with the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Sir Simon Rattle. He also appears in the film of the Glyndebourne production of Porgy and Bess and as Tom in Gershwin's Blue Monday Blues for Swiss television.

In the 1997-98 season Mr. Washington returns to the operatic stage in production of Fidelio, Aida and Porgy and Bess in Spain, Germany and Holland. Other current engagements include the Verdi Requiem with the Czech Philharmonic, the Brahms Requiem with the Greenville Symphony and the part of Prince Boland in Fierrabras by Schubert. He also performs exceprts from Porgy and Bess with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the Belgian Military Wind Ensemble in Brussels and at the Kenwood Festival in London.

Daniel Washington has won many awards, including the First Prize in the International Voice Competition of Toulouse and the First Prize in the International Competition of Lyric Singing of Verviers. He also won the Bad Hersfeld Opera Prize in recognition of his excellence in performing the role of Jochanaan in Salome.

He is currently Professor of Voice at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. His peformances with American Voices include concerts in Uzbekistan, Germany, France and Luxembourg.
