Cultural Diplomacy
American Voices was founded in response to new opportunities for cultural dialogue between the United States and the newly independent countries of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Since then, American Voices has evolved into the only American musical organization committed entirely to interactive performances and performing arts education in the Middle Eastern, Central Asian and African national currently so prominent in world affairs: Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Egypt, Sudan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan and Syria among many others.
As the founder of the only international jazz festivals in Azerbaijan and
Kazakhstan, American Voices has endeared itself to local audiences through
three years of free concerts and workshops featuring prominent headline
artists including Toots Thielemans and Maynard Ferguson. As the presenter of
the first Broadway performances in Uzbekistan and the first U.S. Hip Hop
performers in Vietnam, American Voices has shown its commitment to more open
societies and cultural life by highlighting local young talent in our
performances. As the first U.S. arts organization to provide long-term programming in Iraq since 2003 and Afghanistan since 2001, American Voices has provided much needed education, performance, methods and music scores and instruments to people and institutions emerging from decades of isolation and cultural repression.
American Voices has brought hope and inspiration to local students, teachers, performing artists and audiences thirsting for such contact and educational opportunities with American artists.
